Many people make New Year resolutions, and there are a lot of favourites, aren’t there? From giving up smoking (do people still smoke?) to cutting down or cutting out alcohol: from losing weight to doing more exercise; and from doubling your business turnover to getting a new job.

But here’s the thing – most New Year resolutions are lost in the mists of time by the end of January.

And why is that? Because they are purely outcome-based. Whether it’s, ‘I want to lose 10kg’ or ‘I want to double my turnover’ – the focus here is the outcome. And focusing on the goal is not enough.

What do I mean by that? Let me explain. When someone focuses on a goal, all sorts of things can get in the way. And when the going gets tough, the goal can quickly be put aside as not as important as the person thought it was, or it becomes something to go back to later.

So, what is the secret I mentioned?

What is your best goal for 2024?

I believe the best goal for anyone is to know and love themselves a bit better. Why do I say that? Because when you know yourself, then you understand what is truly important to you, and why. And when you love yourself, you create the space to look after yourself and your needs.

When you focus on what you need, you set better goals. You set goals that actually mean something to you and you understand WHY they are important. Like this, you are much more likely to achieve those goals.

Because when things get tough, the importance of not giving up, of understanding your WHY and of loving yourself enough to keep your promise to yourself, are all critical factors that will keep you going.

Achieving goals, big or small, builds self-esteem.

And what kind of person sets good goals? Someone who has the self-belief to create plans for how to achieve their goals.

I don’t usually agree with New Year’s Resolutions (because why wait until January when you can start now?) but if you do, then your top goal for next year should be to spend time on you.

Look after yourself the way you look after your family and friends. Seek to understand yourself, as much as you seek to understand others. Forgive yourself if you mess up. And back yourself, be your own cheerleader.

Get ready for the New Year and all the opportunities it brings by putting yourself at the top of the priority list for 2024.
