Are You An Abundance Blocker??
At one of my virtual events the other day, someone asked a great question about abundance. Well â there were a lot of great questions but this one seemed to resonate with a lot of people.
The question was â âIt doesnât matter how many dream boards I create or how many goals I set, I never seem to achieve what I want. There is something holding me back. How do I find out what that is, so I can finally find out what an abundant life could be like?â
In this specific instance the question related to financial abundance. And the real problem here was that the woman who asked the question, was asking the wrong question.
The Path to Abundance
You see, she had all sorts of dreams, and things that she would like. A new house, her own thriving business, holidays in the Maldives and other exotic places. But hereâs the thing, she didnât know her WHY.
And why does that matter? Well, if you donât know WHY you are here, what your purpose is, and feel connected to and passionate about that â then the rest are just âthingsâ. Someone once said, to have the things that most people donât you have to be prepared to do what other people wonât.
That is true when you think about it. To achieve anything worthwhile takes effort, and the more worthwhile the more effort.
If you want to, for example, run a garage employing 10 people and with a turnover in 6 figures, there are steps you need to take and things you need to do to make that happen. There are sacrifices to be made and hard decisions. There are times when you donât want to go to work, but you have to. Until you get to where you want to be.
Imagine that on steroids.
What do you have to be prepared to do to run Tesla? Multi billion-pound company and the most profitable car manufacturer on earth. Iâm not endorsing Tesla by the way â just pointing out that the bigger the dream, goal or vision you have the more you have to be prepared to do. You must work more hours, maybe be more ruthless, make many sacrifices.
And the only way you can do that is if you:-
- Have a really strong sense of purpose. You MUST know and emotionally connect to your WHY. Your WHY must be big enough to make all the hard work worth it. And if it is your WHY then it doesnât feel like hard work. Simon Sinek has said when you work doing something you donât love that is called stress, and when you work doing something you love (your WHY), then it is passion.
- You need the right mindset.
If you are not seeing the abundance that you deserve in your life you might be focusing on the wrong thing. Even if you think you know your WHY.
Let me tell you a story.
I remember being at an event, it was a village fun day. Businesses sponsor this event and so there is lots of free stuff for the community. There was an ice cream van, which was giving away free ice creams for all the kids. As I was walking past there was a Dad almost dragging a young boy away from the van.
âDAAAAD. Itâ s free ice creamâ cried the boy. âThe queue is too longâ replied the Dad. âBut Dad I want an ice creamâ, said the boy. âI will get you one on the way homeâ,  said the Dad.
I possibly donât need to tell you that after another round of back and forth the smiling boy and the disgruntled Dad, were standing at the end of the long queue.
You see â the boy just saw ice cream, and the Dad just saw the queue. Some people focus on the good (free ice cream) and some on the bad/problem (the long queue). And kids being the natural salespeople they are â the âgoodâ won on this occasion.
How many times do people allow their own thinking to prevent them from getting what they want?
Most of this programming is so ingrained that you donât even know you are doing it.
But if you were able to write down every single thought that you had in a day, how many of them would be along these lines:-
I canât meet my friends tonight; I have too much work to do.
Itâs not worth applying for that job, there is too much competition.
Iâd love to run my own business, but thatâs silly, I donât have enough money to start a business.
Iâd love to lose weight, but I donât want to live on lettuce leaves.
Thereâs no point dreaming about X because Iâm not good enoughâŠ.
If any of that sounds familiar, then know that you are not alone. And also know that you can change things.
There are people in this world who are not as nice as you, not as clever as you, not as creative as you, donât have as much support as you, donât have as much money as you (even if you think you donât have enough money), and donât have as much skills as you.
And those people have the things you want. How is that possible?
Firstly, they almost certainly know their WHY. And secondly, they have sorted out their mindset and self-talk. How do I know this? There are so many examples â but hereâs one fairly well-known person who, it turns out, is a great example. Who knew?
David Beckham.
Iâm not the biggest football fan, but I was in an interesting conversation the other day about David Beckham. He is arguably not the cleverest person in the world, he certainly didnât have the most money in the world (Dad appliance repair man, Mum hairdresser), and back when he was just dreaming about playing for Manchester United â sure he was talented â but so were plenty of others.
George Best said about him – “He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle, and he doesn’t score many goals. Apart from that he’s all right.”
The difference is â he absolutely knew his purpose.
All he ever wanted to be, was a professional football player and – just like his Dad – his dream team was Manchester United, despite growing up in London. That single mindedness, and passion / vision / purpose led him to train harder than anyone else.
On the Path To Abundance
In his 2013 book titled David Beckham, he recalled how he worked at it even long before he joined United:
âI must have taken tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands [of free kicks]. I would go to the local park, place the ball on the ground and aim at the wire meshing over the window of a small community hut. When my dad got home from work, we would go over to the goalposts together. He would stand between me and the goal, forcing me to bend the ball around him.â
And it wasnât just the work ethic, but the attitude that created the work ethic that is critical. His mindset was that the win was always possible â however unlikely it seemed. Nothing can be achieved without the right mindset, and I would argue the ONLY way to possess the right mindset when achieving big dreams, is to have found your WHY.
If you feel you are not living the life you were meant to live but you are not sure how to figure out what that is, then you might want to join me at one of my free virtual events this week.
