Who Are You?

Who are you? Most people answer that question with labels. I’m Josh’s Mum. I’m David’s wife. I’m a Social Media Manager. I’m an Accountant. I’m a Widow. But that is WHAT you are, not who you are.

My labels are “International Award-Winning Speaker and Speaker Coach”, “Wife”, “Co-Founder of Find Your Why, and How To Speak With…”. But they are not who I am, and no label on earth is who YOU are either.

It can be really tricky to find the answer to the question of who you are. (but you could start with getting a free genetic blueprint here) I like to refer to the Marianne Williamson quote about our greatest fear. Let me refresh your memory.

““Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,” Williamson writes in A Return to Love. “Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.”

And I wonder, if that is something to do with the labels we give ourselves. If we contemplate our brilliance, it IS scary – who KNOWS what we could do. When we have a label – Speaker Coach – for example, we know what that is – we help other people to become better speakers.

Boxes are comfortable

We are in a box of our own making – and it may or may not be the right box, but it is safe. And almost certainly is NOT who we are. And then – when we are in that box –  we don’t have to think about who we really are and what we are here to do. What is our purpose? What is yours? A lot of people say to me – ‘Cheryl, my kids are my WHY, they are my purpose’. And I say – gently and with love – ‘No they are not’. They are certainly your responsibility. And they may be why you do what you do right now. But they are not who you are.

Now don’t get me wrong – there are some people who were clearly born to be Mums. They only ever wanted to be a Mum, and they love every second of it and live their lives for their kids, to make their kids happy, to give them the opportunities they never had. And most Mums would resonate with that.

But here’s the thing. If that is ALL you ever wanted to do and be, great, nothing wrong with that. Except for – what happens when one day they leave home. Maybe, like a friend of mines mum – the kids go to Australia and America respectively, and so you can’t even be a hands-on Grandma. What then? What about YOU?

What About Your Purpose?

You see, my label is speaker coach, but my WHY is to help others live their life on purpose. SO what IS a purposeful life and how do you find what you are here to do?

Well, take Aisha in our WHYs Women Community. At one of our recent Live Love Laugh LIVE days, Aisha Aminu was one of the speakers and she spoke about this very subject – labels! If you want to watch her Talk – click here.

As part of her journey to giving this brilliant talk, we took her through her genetic blueprint. She found out her type is The Architect. She is here to guide others. By giving the talk, it brought her family closer together, as her daughter had not known her Mum’s story. By going through this journey, Aisha has realised that her purpose, her WHY, is to become a coach and so she is currently training for that purpose.

The Great Thing About Knowing Your Purpose

You see – when you know your purpose and drop your labels, you can make better decisions. You can look at opportunities and assess whether they take you along your path of purpose, or take you off track. Decisions are so much easier.

Finding your purpose enables you to live YOUR life and not someone else’s version of what your life should be. Doing what you came here for increases your happiness. What is “happy” to you?

Now I am not saying that when you find your purpose, you are eternally happy and never have a bad day, right? Of course, bad things can and do happen to good people. People living a life of purpose still come across bereavement or illness, or just days when your energy isn’t as high and you don’t feel great.

And that’s as it should be. That is life. And those days help us to see the contrast. If you are having more bad days than good ones, if you feel that you are no longer on the right track, if you have lost your way – come and join the community in the Live Love Laugh Lounge. Here we live, we laugh, we do the things we love, and we begin a journey of finding YOU.
